Short answer: it depends on the type of product. “Wireless CarPlay” can mean two very different things, and that changes everything about whether it’ll work in your car.
Dongle adapters (Carlinkit, Ottocast): only work if your car already has factory CarPlay
These small adapters plug into your factory infotainment’s USB port and turn the wired CarPlay/Android Auto your car already has into wireless. If your car never came with factory CarPlay — wired or otherwise — this type of adapter won’t help. It doesn’t create a feature that doesn’t exist, it just removes the cable from one that already does.
Standalone screens (Carpuride): work in virtually any car
Carpuride is different: it doesn’t depend on your factory infotainment because it brings its own screen. That means it works even in cars that never had CarPlay or Android Auto built in — including older cars, work vehicles, or motorcycles.
In practice, it covers 800+ car models from 2016 onward (the exceptions are BMW and Tesla, which use proprietary systems it can’t interface with). All it needs is an available 12V outlet or USB port.
What to check before buying
- Your phone: needs to be a CarPlay-capable iPhone or an Android Auto-compatible Android phone
- Available power: a 12V outlet or USB port on the dash
- Car brand: BMW and Tesla are excluded; most others (Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, VW, Hyundai, and more) work fine
Bottom line
If you already have factory CarPlay and just want to ditch the cable, a dongle adapter does the job. If your car doesn’t have a compatible touchscreen at all, Carpuride is the option that actually works, because it doesn’t depend on what’s already in your dash.
